Morocco is one of those places that I wasn't sure I dared, but at the same time couldn't wait, to visit. So as soon as I heard about an organized group excursion, with a trusted guide, I immediately signed up. Although I did not visit Morocco as a family vacation, I believe it would be a fantastic experience for families as well.
If you want to do Morocco safely, I highly recommend "Move Morocco" as a reputable travel agency, who has connections with trusted in-country guides. I felt completely safe when with the group (I have safety suggestions if you do choose to go out on your own). With Move Morocco, you can go with a pre-crafted itinerary, or build your own. In building your own itinerary, I highly recommend:
Staying at Riad Jouba in Merzouga. We were welcomed by the local Gnawa people, playing African percussion music and singing to us. The host family had the most delicious tagine and couscous dinner waiting for us.
Booking the camel rides through the Sahara, then camp overnight in the luxury desert camp. This was the absolute coolest part of our whole week in Morocco.
Riding the jeeps on the sand dunes and visiting Berber families who live in the desert.
These are activities all members of the family can enjoy.
Other highlights of my trip that may interest you and your family were watching artisans craft beautiful ceramics, Moroccan rugs, and leather goods in factory tours. I also loved the opportunity to participate in pottery making with a welcoming local family. What else might be on your wishlist if you go to Morocco? Beaches? Shopping? The blue city? The medinas? Whatever your wishlist entails, the team at Move Morocco can turn your dreams into a safe, affordable itinerary.
Safety Tips
Do not drink the water. Do not brush your teeth with the water. Fortunately, unlimited bottled water was included in our trip price. I had no issues. But I do recommend bringing probiotics and activated charcoal just in case.
If you choose to visit the markets, stay with your group and stay within the market. This is the only time during our trip where I felt unsafe. We had split from the group and met a "helpful guide" who wanted to show us a "short cut" to the leather shop we were looking for. That short cut involved him sending us outside the market to some deserted streets. He had followed us into this deserted area. We turned around and went back into the market ASAP, and I felt like we had dodged a major bullet. Listen to your instincts. Stay with your group and stay away from the secluded areas/ streets outside the market where you could become a victim of a robbery.
